San Diego's charm lives in its enclaves: the cliffside village of La Jolla, the Victorian streets of the Gaslamp, the quiet beaches of Coronado. A weekend lets you sample each without rushing.
Saturday: La Jolla by the Sea
Begin at La Jolla Cove early, when the sea lions are lounging and the tide pools are exposed. Walk the coastal path toward Children's Pool, then settle in for lunch on the ocean terrace at George's at the Cove.
Where to Stay in La Jolla
La Valencia, the pink 'Pink Lady' of Prospect Street, has been the village's grand hotel since 1926. Ocean-view rooms overlook Scripps Park.
Sunday: Waterfront History & Harbor Sailing
The Maritime Museum's Star of India — the world's oldest active sailing ship — anchors a waterfront walk past Seaport Village and the Embarcadero. Continue to the Gaslamp Quarter for 19th-century architecture and a long, lazy lunch.
A Sunset Sail
End the weekend on the water. Two-hour sunset sails depart from Harbor Drive and loop past the Coronado Bridge and Point Loma as the sky turns gold.
Where to Dine
- Ironside Fish & Oyster — Little Italy's best raw bar
- Galaxy Taco — refined Baja-style tacos in La Jolla Shores
- Born & Raised — a theatrical steakhouse with a rooftop
